What Is Exactly A Daf Music?

The Daf instrument is a large-frame drum from the Middle East. It is widely used in Armenia, Iran, Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Greece. It can be spelled as Daf, Daff, Deff, or Duff. The frame is composed of wood and has many metal rings affixed to it.

A daf’s membrane is often constructed of animal skin such as goat, horse, or cow, but synthetic materials are also used in recent forms.

The frame is constructed of sturdy wood. It has a diameter of approximately 48-55 cm. The skin of the daf instrument is firmly attached to the frame. Metal pegs are stuck behind the frame to keep the skin tight.

There are no jingles on the Daf instrument. Hooks on the inside of the wooden frame help the rings hang. When the instrument moves, these rings behave similarly to jingles.

What Are The Various Types Of Daf?

Solo Daf is a model built exclusively for solo performances. The jingles have a high-pitched, clear tone. It has a higher tone and a more expansive sound. The soloist quickly plays the instrument using calm finger movements on the surface.

Because of the natural materials utilized in the production process, dampness may harm the skin of the Daf. A studio Daf is a unique model designed to prevent changes in skin tightness. Playing the instrument throughout the performance is beneficial without worrying about song changes.

The Daf instrument has a loud voice. However, in an orchestra, this mighty voice could drown out the sounds of the other instruments. To avoid this issue in an ensemble, the player should utilize an orchestra daf with a lighter, gentler tone that fits well with other instruments.

The bass daf model is more extensive and has thicker skin. This allows it to capture a richer, deeper, and more suitable bass sound.

Treble Daf is another specialized method for capturing high notes. They are also suitable for winter shows.

How To Play Daf ?

  • The Daf instrument is versatile and can be played in various ways. The Daf is known for its crisp sound and low tone. Many dafs have bells and plates on the sides in a tambourine-style design. Like many hand drums, the def is formed of bent wood and covered in animal hide.
  • The drum shell is usually solid and hollow. It differs from many simple frame drums in that the drum head is attached by metal tuning screws, allowing you to modify the pitch and tone of the notes.
  • These screws allow you to adjust the drum’s low, musical tones.
  • Hold the instrument in front of you. Position the left at 6 o’clock and the right at 3 o’clock.
  • The rings should be towards the player, and the drumhead should be facing away. The three first strokes are a bass tone, “dum,” a high-pitched tone, “tak,” and another high-pitched but softer and slightly muted tone, “ka.”
  • The right hand produces the dum and tak strokes, while the left has the ka stroke.
  • To generate the dum stroke, keep your fingertips together in a little arc and strike the center of the Daf with the tips.
  • It improves the Daf’s bounce and produces a deep bass tone. For the tak sound, use four fingers and strike the instrument from the edge.
  • To perform the ka stroke, rotate your left wrist and hit with four fingers slightly from the frame’s upper edge.
  • The Daf is played with the arms, wrists, hands, and fingers all working together simultaneously.
  • The hands and wrists aid the performer in maintaining a solid grip on the instrument while the fingers generate sound. At the same time, the arms fall or rise and shake the frame, causing synchronized movements with the head and the rings. Hand and finger methods produce a wide range of tone and rhythmic variations.
